Interview with Skate Cambria
Did you know that 100% of the proceeds from the 2021 United We Stand Festival were donated to the Cambria Skatepark Initiative?
Last year’s events were hard on all of us, but nobody was hit harder than our children. The skateboarding community of our home base’s sunny California town was hit particularly hard when their skate park was unexpectedly torn down.
Devastated, these small-town kids had nowhere else to turn, at a time when things frankly, were hard enough.
The kids and grownups of the Skate Cambria initiative have been working tirelessly to rebuild this cornerstone of the community, and they need our help.
Together, through the 2021 United We Stand Festival Livestream event on 4th of July weekend, we hope to help them raise enough funds to rebuild their hometown skate park bigger and better than before.
This country rises on the backs of our children — they deserve the best childhood we can give them.
SKATE-INSPIRED, YOUTH-DRIVEN, AND COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED!
About Skate Cambria
In the Spring of 2020, the skaters of Cambria lost their local skatepark. It was removed and reverted back to an empty asphalt lot without any real input from the local skate community.
This hit the youth of Cambria especially hard, as they lost not only their skatepark but also their place to gather and hang out with friends.
With the support of their parents and other local skaters, Skate Cambria was formed with the mission of rebuilding the skatepark as a modern concrete facility that will last for generations of skaters to come.
Skate Cambria is committed to this mission and has made its voice heard to the community and local government through weekly rallies, discussions with stakeholders, and consistent attendance of community planning meetings.
So far there has been an amazing amount of support from the community, and fundraising efforts are off to a strong start through donations, merchandise sales, and successful submissions of pending grant applications.
As an added benefit, this project is giving the youth of Cambria a way to engage and connect with their community during this unprecedented time of a global pandemic. They are learning critical skills on how to effectively organize for change, and even their schools have recognized this by allowing them to receive credit towards their community service graduation requirements as they help with different fundraising opportunities and rallies for the park.
To spearhead this effort, a board of students, collectively referred to as the Skate Initiative, was formed to act as the voice of Skate Cambria and ensure the youth will remain active in the park’s future even after the park is built.
Everyone involved is aware that this isn’t going to happen as quickly as the old park was removed, but so far momentum is building and things are headed in the right direction. All of your support is greatly appreciated!
WE WANT TO SKATE and SKATE CAMBRIA is here to make it happen.
